Pharmacognosy of Enzymes

Enzymes are proteins which act as natural catalysts to push certain chemical reactions. Enzymes have been found useful in many disorders. In this article we take a look at the commonly found natural enzymes and their pharmacognosy.

Papain

PLANT PART :- Latex of unripe fruit

USES :- Anti-inflammatory, clarification of beverages

Bromelain

NAME :- Bromelain

BIOLOGICAL SOURCE :- Ananas comosus

FAMILY :- Bromeliaceae

PLANT PART :- Stem of Pineapple

USES :- Treatment in soft tissue inflammation and oedema

Malt Extract

NAME :- Malt Extract

BIOLOGICAL SOURCE :- Hordeum vulgare

FAMILY :- Graminae

PLANT PART :- grains

USES :- Nutritive and as flavouring agent to cover bitter taste

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS :-Maltose, Proteins and Amylolytic enzymes

Serratiopeptidase

NAME :- Serratiopeptidase

BIOLOGICAL SOURCE :- Serratia

ORIGIN:- Bacteria of genus

USES :- Removing inflammation, increase in antibiotic effect to infected areas

Urokinase

NAME :- Urokinase

BIOLOGICAL SOURCE :- Tissue culture of kidney/ Human urine

USES :- Dissolve blood clots in pulmonary embolism and anterior eye chamber

Streptokinase (Streptococci)

NAME :- Streptokinase

BIOLOGICAL SOURCE :- Streptococci

SOURCE OF ORIGIN :- Filtrates of beta hemolytic group C

USES :- Thromboembolic disoder treatment

Pepsin (Sus scrofa)

NAME :- Pepsin

BIOLOGICAL SOURCE :- Sus scrofa

SOURCE OF ORIGIN :- Glandular layer of fresh stomach

USES :- Converts protein into peptone and proteose
